Engineered Lighting
Mastering the balance of light, heat, and the harshest environments on earth.
Designing architectural lighting for outdoor environments is a fundamentally different discipline than designing for indoors. It is an engineering challenge that requires balancing directly opposing forces. Over the past 30 years, Aqualux has honed a design approach and technical capability focused on one specific goal: creating luminaires that thrive in the uncompromising Australian climate.

The Australian landscape is notoriously harsh. From intense, punishing UV radiation and extreme temperature fluctuations to highly corrosive coastal salt spray, our environment tests exterior fixtures to their absolute limits. We design specifically for these conditions, selecting marine-grade materials—like solid copper, aged brass, and aerospace-grade aluminium—that don't just survive the elements, but age beautifully within them.
The greatest enemy of an LED is heat, and the greatest enemy of an outdoor electrical fixture is moisture.
To maximize the lifespan and color stability of an LED, heat must be efficiently drawn away from the chip and dissipated. In an indoor setting, this is relatively simple. Outdoors, however, the luminaire must be completely and permanently sealed to achieve high Ingress Protection (IP) ratings against driving rain, dust, and insects.
The Engineering Paradox: How do you let heat out without letting moisture in?
Our design lab in Sydney spends countless hours solving this exact problem. Through precision CNC-machined housings, advanced thermal management geometry, and proprietary potting and sealing techniques, we create thermal pathways that draw heat away from the LED array. Crucially, our fittings are engineered to withstand decades of thermal cycling (the expansion and contraction caused by heating up at night and cooling rapidly in the rain) without ever compromising their watertight seals.
Our design philosophy isn't just about the physical housing; it extends to the electronic architecture and the experience of the installer.
We have recently launched our next-generation 24V Constant Voltage (CV) 2-Wire dimming COB LEDs. This technology represents a massive leap forward in both light quality and installation efficiency.
